Global – Ikea is introducing Kompishäng, a new collection of 13 affordable, portable furniture pieces designed for young city dwellers navigating frequent moves between rentals, neighbourhoods and cities. Launching globally in August 2026, the collection is made from materials including solid pine, powder-coated steel and durable canvas, with pieces designed to be packed, carried and re-used across different homes.

Kompishäng is a response to a shift in urban living, where flexibility and mobility are becoming central to how people define home. Research by Ikea among 20–28-year-olds in central London found that young renters prioritise furniture that is easy to move, long-lasting and capable of creating belonging in temporary spaces.

‘Even if you move often, you don’t want your home to feel temporary,’ says Dora Ding, product developer at Ikea of Sweden.

Look out for our upcoming Communities report, The Neo-Urbanites, which explores how city dwellers are renegotiating urban life on their own terms – and the opportunities this creates for brands.

Strategic opportunity

As lifestyles become more fluid, brands have an opportunity to design products around adaptability and changing patterns of ownership, creating objects that travel with people, rather than stay fixed in place

Dior gives luxury’s literary turn a nostalgic twist

France – Dior has transformed Eric Carle’s children’s classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar into a 23-piece luxury capsule collection, bringing one of publishing’s most recognisable characters into the fashion house’s playful new era.

Created under the direction of Jonathan Anderson, the collection applies Carle’s distinctive illustrations across garments, accessories and lifestyle products.

The famous green caterpillar appears on medium and mini-Dior Book Totes, knitwear, T-shirts, slippers and a blanket.

By translating a familiar childhood image into a luxury fashion proposition, Dior is tapping into the emotional pull of nostalgia while expanding the role of literary characters within luxury.

Read our Luxury’s Literary Economy report to understand how luxury brands are embracing literature as a cultural system.

Stat: US travellers struggle to spot AI-generated destination images

US – A new survey reveals that only 5% of American travellers can correctly identify real destination photography from AI-generated alternatives, despite 74% saying they would not book a trip without seeing images first.

Commissioned by the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development and conducted by Talker Research, the study found that photos and videos are the second most influential factor in destination choice after price, highlighting growing concerns about trust in travel imagery.

Owing to AI-generated visuals becoming more common, travellers are becoming increasingly uncertain about whether the destinations they see online reflect reality. More than 70% said they had arrived somewhere that looked different from the images seen during planning.

As a result, authenticity is becoming a competitive advantage. Commissioner Mark Ezell said: ‘In tourism, real photography is increasingly more important than ever,’ with Tennessee launching a photo certification programme pledging to use only real photography.

This reflects the findings in our report, The Synthocene Era, which explores how AI-driven technologies are eroding trust and the research in our report, Optimised Odysseys, which highlights the increasing demand for authentic, nature-based travel experiences as people seek real-world connection in an increasingly synthetic world.

Strategic opportunity

Prioritise human proof points by increasing visibility of customer stories, creator content and community perspectives that algorithms and synthetic media cannot replicate
